Software company can also take advantages from this product. It can also provide voice test for call centers candidates. It generates report of skill test result. IEEE Terminology: A test of the behavior of a program by executing on sample data. Software testing is an activity designed to evaluating the ability of software and determining that it meets its required goal.

The trouble in software testing stems from the complexity of a program. We can not completely test a program. Software testing is more than just finding errors. The purpose of testing can be check the reliability, quality, efficiency, verification and validation.

Error, fault and failure

Error, Fault and Failure.

Error: An error is a human action that produces a wrong result. Like we made a mistake in code of a program. The results of an error become a fault.

Fault: A sign of an error in software is called fault. When a tester finds the error in the code is called Bug. A collection of faults become a reason of failure.

Failure: The errors and faults in a program become a reason of failure, when software unable to provide its expected delivery or service.

Exhaustive testing

Exhaustive testing is defined as exercising every possible combination of inputs and preconditions. This usually amounts to an impractical number of test cases. For most systems it is relatively easy to identify millions of possible test cases (not necessarily all desirable test cases).

Exhaustive testing can not be possible because we can not execute every possible test case, it will be very expensive and may take years to test a software.

How much testing is enough?

It is possible to do enough testing but identifying that how much is enough is bit difficult. Simply executing the test cases which are planned is not enough since it leaves the question as to how much testing should be planned.

How much is enough is depend on the results of testing a program. If lots of faults are found with a set of planned tests it is likely that more tests will be required to assure that the required level of software quality is achieved. On the other hand, if very few faults are found with the planned set of tests, then no more tests will be required.

You may stop testing tested enough when you are confident that the system works correctly.
"How much testing is enough?" is "It depends!" It depends on risk, the risk of missing faults, which may become a reason of failure and cost us higher.

Re-testing and Regression Testing

After a test fails and a software fault is reported, the developer fixes the fault. After fixing the fault, tester again execute the test again to confirm that the fault has been fixed. This is known as re-testing.

Re-testing ensure that the test is executed in exactly the same way as it was the first time, using the same inputs, data and environment. If the test passes successfully, its mean the fault has fixed now. However we need to do some more tests. Because when developer fixed the fault, he might change some code, the changes may affect other code or other part of the software. So we test for unexpected side-effects. This is called regression testing.

Verification and Validation

Verification is the checking or testing of item. It is the process of evaluating each phase end product to ensure consistency with the end product of the previous phase.

Verification: Are we doing the job right?

Validation is the process of testing software, or a specification, to ensure that it matches the user’s requirements.

Validation: Are we doing the right job?

Software testing is that part of validation and verification associated with evaluating and analyzing program code.

Acceptance Testing

Acceptance testing last stage of the testing process before the system is accepted by client. The software is tested with data supplied by the client rather then data made by our own testing.

Acceptance testing may disclose errors in the system requirements definitions, as live data exercises the software in a different way from the test data.

Acceptance testing may be perform at our end in which the software developer and the client agrees that the delivered system is an acceptable implementation of the system requirements. This is also known as Alpha testing.

Beta testing involves delivering a system to end users to use/test the system on their on real data. The users test the system and give their feedback. Acceptance is depending on their feedbacks.

Static Testing Techniques

These techniques are referred to as "static" because the software is not executed; rather the specifications, documentation and source code that comprise the software are examined in varying degrees of detail.

There are two basic types of static testing. One of these is people-based and the other is tool-based. People-based techniques are generally known as “reviews” but there are a variety of different ways in which reviews can be performed. The tool-based techniques examine source code and are known as "static analysis.
